RESOLUTION

Honoring the life, service, and legacy of the Honorable Jon Llewellyn Kyl, former Senator for the State of Arizona.

Whereas Jon Llewellyn Kyl (referred to in this preamble as ``Senator Kyl'') was born on April 25, 1942, in Oakland, Nebraska; Whereas Senator Kyl earned a bachelor's degree in 1964 and a law degree in 1966 from the University of Arizona, where he met his wife, Caryll; Whereas Senator Kyl was admitted to the Arizona State Bar in 1966, practiced law in Phoenix for 20 years, and served as chairman of the Phoenix Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce from 1984 to 1985; Whereas Senator Kyl was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1986 and represented the people of Arizona's Fourth Congressional District for 4 terms, from January 3, 1987, to January 3, 1995; Whereas Senator Kyl was elected to the United States Senate in 1994, reelected in 2000 and 2006, and represented the people of Arizona in the Senate from January 3, 1995, to January 3, 2013; Whereas Senator Kyl was selected by his colleagues to serve as chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee, chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, and Republican Whip; Whereas Senator Kyl made lasting contributions to Arizona and the United States through his work on water policy, crime victims' rights, national security, defense, and intelligence; Whereas, following the death of Senator John McCain, Senator Kyl once again answered the call to public service when he was appointed to the Senate on September 4, 2018, took the oath of office on September 5, 2018, and served through December 31, 2018; Whereas, after leaving elected office, Senator Kyl continued to serve the United States, including as vice chair of the Congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of the United States; Whereas the Kyl Center for Water Policy at Arizona State University's Morrison Institute for Public Policy and the Kyl Institute for National Security at the University of Arizona were named in his honor, reflecting his enduring contributions to Arizona and the United States; and Whereas Senator Kyl passed away at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy of distinguished service to the people of Arizona and the United States: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the Senate-- (1) has heard with profound sorrow and deep regret the announcement of the death of Jon Llewellyn Kyl, former member of the Senate; (2) respectfully requests that the Secretary of the Senate communicate this resolution to the House of Representatives and transmit an enrolled copy thereof to the family of Jon Llewellyn Kyl; and (3) stands adjourned as a further mark of respect to the memory of the late Jon Llewellyn Kyl when the Senate adjourns today. <all>
